Better Basics Reading Programme Volunteers Opportunity

Better Basics Reading Volunteer

What’s Involved

Better Basics
The Better Basics Reading Programme is all about working with local primary schools in Finglas/Cabra & Ballymun. The aim of the programme is to improve the reading ability of children.

Volunteer Opportunity

This is an amazing opportunity to use a small piece of your day to help a child reach their full potential and discover the joy of reading. Volunteers help out by working one to one with up to three children for: 15 mins, twice a week (15 weeks).
Better Reading Volunteers will be trained in the techniques required to work with children to enable them to develop and improve their reading skills. All Volunteers will have ongoing support by our dedicated Coordinator.

Suitable candidates for becoming volunteers include Parents, Grandparents, University Students, Trainee Teachers, SNA’s and Youthworkers
The Programme is currently running in four schools and in the coming weeks there will be another three schools involved.  This brings the number of volunteers to 15 and children benefitting from the programme to 30.

It is important to note that volunteers can be parents in schools, grand parents, guardians or just someone who would like to give to the community.  Last year the average improvement in reading age for the children involved was 9 months.  Better Basics aims to improve children’s reading skills so they may have greater participation in class and improve their confidence.  All volunteers must be Garda Vetted and participate in two half days training.
